Marine Skylight Excellence: Performance Under Extreme Conditions

The skylight system for Queen Mary 2’s pool area represents cutting-edge marine glazing technology, specifically engineered to withstand the harsh conditions of North Atlantic crossings while providing an exceptional experience for passengers. Our multi-layered glazing system delivers:

AllGlass Marine Solutions: Enhancing the Cunard Experience

Pool Area Skylight System

The retractable skylight system above the pool area on Deck 12 creates a bright, airy atmosphere while providing protection from the elements. The sliding mechanism allows the crew to open the space to fresh air when weather permits or seal it completely during rough Atlantic crossings.

Safety-Enhanced Construction

The multi-layered glass construction with PVB interlayers provides exceptional safety characteristics, ensuring the skylight maintains its structural integrity even in the most challenging sea conditions. This construction exceeds maritime safety regulations while providing acoustic benefits.

Climate Optimization Technology

Our specialized glass composition maintains comfortable interior temperatures regardless of external conditions—from tropical Caribbean heat to frigid North Atlantic passages. The system's thermal properties help reduce the vessel's energy consumption while enhancing passenger comfort.

Panoramic Experience Enhancement

The skylight design maximizes natural light transmission while controlling solar gain, creating an ideal swimming environment that connects passengers with the surrounding seascape without the discomfort of excessive heat or glare.

AllGlass provided a comprehensive skylight solution that balances durability with passenger comfort in all weather conditions. Our system creates the perfect environment for Queen Mary 2’s signature pool area through specialized glass technologies developed specifically for the demanding marine environment of transatlantic crossings.

Technical Details About This Project

8mm tempered glass (exterior layer)

The exterior tempered glass layer provides exceptional strength against external impacts while offering the first line of defense against harsh marine conditions. The tempering process increases glass strength up to five times that of standard glass and ensures safety by breaking into small granular chunks rather than dangerous shards if damaged.

0.76 PVB interlayer

This polyvinyl butyral interlayer bonds the exterior and middle glass layers while providing additional sound insulation and UV protection. The interlayer helps maintain the structural integrity of the glass if breakage occurs.

8mm SKN 154 tempered (middle layer)

This specialized solar control glass features advanced coatings that selectively filter sunlight—allowing visible light to pass through while reflecting infrared energy. This maintains brightness in the pool area while preventing overheating, a crucial feature for a glass ceiling exposed to direct sunlight.

Aluminum 10mm spacer with argon gas

The aluminum spacer creates a thermal break between glass layers, while the argon gas filling provides superior insulation properties. This construction significantly reduces heat transfer and prevents condensation—critical for maintaining comfort in varying climate conditions.

66.4 PVB Stadip (interior layer)

The interior laminated safety glass consists of multiple glass sheets with PVB interlayers, creating an exceptionally strong and safe interior surface. This construction ensures the glass remains intact if broken, protecting passengers and preventing water ingress.
